Venus retrograde 2026 dates

  • Retrograde begins: October 3, 2026 at 07:16 UTC (12:46 pm IST), at 8°29′ of Scorpio in the tropical zodiac, which is 14°16′ of Libra in the sidereal zodiac.
  • Inferior conjunction: October 24, 2026 at about 03:50 UTC (9:20 am IST), when Venus passes between Earth and the Sun.
  • Direct again: November 14, 2026 at 00:28 UTC (5:58 am IST), at 22°52′ of Libra tropical, which is 28°38′ of Virgo sidereal.

We calculated these with the Swiss Ephemeris and used the Lahiri ayanamsha for the sidereal positions. The October 3 station matches Cafe Astrology’s listing. Venus slows almost to a stop for a few days before each station, so its position barely changes in early October and in mid-November.

Why Venus appears to move backward

Venus orbits the Sun inside Earth’s orbit and moves faster than Earth. About every 19 months, or 584 days, it catches up with and passes Earth. For several weeks around that pass our viewing angle makes Venus seem to slide backward against the background stars, and then it resumes its forward motion. The real orbit never reverses. It is a perspective effect, like a slower car that seems to drift backward when you overtake it.

The midpoint of the retrograde is the inferior conjunction on October 24. Before it Venus is an evening star, low in the west after sunset. Afterward it moves into the morning sky and rises before the Sun for the rest of the retrograde and for months beyond.

Which signs: tropical versus sidereal

Western astrologers describe this retrograde as running from Scorpio into Libra. In Jyotish, which uses the sidereal zodiac, the same stretch of sky runs from Libra into Virgo, because the two zodiacs differ by the ayanamsha, currently about 24.2°. In Jyotish Libra is a sign Venus rules, and Virgo is the sign where Venus is traditionally considered debilitated, with the deepest point at 27°. This retrograde ends at about 28.6° of sidereal Virgo, close to that point.

How the traditions read it

In Jyotish, Venus (Shukra) signifies love, partnership, comfort and the arts, and a retrograde (vakri) planet is read as acting more intensely and turning inward. Many astrologers treat these weeks as a time to review relationships, values and money rather than start new commitments, and Western tradition says much the same. These are interpretive frameworks. There is no scientific evidence that relationships end more often during a Venus retrograde, and nothing in the sky decides whether a partnership succeeds.

A practical checklist for couples

  • Wait 24 hours before making a permanent decision in the middle of an argument.
  • Revisit unresolved topics on purpose, at a calm time, instead of letting them resurface in fights.
  • Agree on a shared budget and check big purchases together.
  • Keep a short journal of what comes up so you can see patterns without blaming each other.
  • Expect some delays in plans and keep spare time in your schedule. That is simply good planning.

Traditional Venus observances

Some people mark Fridays, the day of Shukra, with simple observances: offering white flowers, wearing light colours, chanting the Shukra beej mantra, or giving food or milk to someone in need. These are devotional customs. Nothing here requires spending money, buying gemstones or fasting, and anyone with a medical condition should not fast without medical advice.
